Non-Surgical Eyelid Lift

Various treatments have been promised as delivering “dramatic rejuvenation” using non-surgical techniques. In general, whatever sounds too good to be true often is. The different approaches to eyelid rejuvenation without incisions include injectable dermal fillers, laser treatments, radiofrequency technologies and Botox. Although none of these treatments can achieve something comparable to a comprehensive surgical blepharoplasty performed by an expert, these treatments may have some value.

Non-invasive Blepharoplasty with Dermal Fillers

Dark circles of the under-eye area represent one important aspect of lower eyelid aging. Advanced modern eyelid rejuvenation planned by an expert addresses both puffiness and dark circles. Using injectable dermal fillers, the dark-circle depressions can be softened and the bags made less apparent. Advantages of this non-invasive treatment include minimal to no recovery, minimal risks and avoidance of surgery. Unfortunately, the results are temporary and not every patient is a good candidate for non-surgical eyelid procedures. Best candidates are younger patients with early signs of lower lid aging who want to postpone a thorough blepharoplasty for a year or two. The upper lid region usually is not significantly improved with this approach. Various filler substances have been employed for the non-invasive approach including Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse and Sculptra. None of these filler products has been approved for the use around the eyes. Although manufacturers discourage doctors from using their products for non-surgical eyelid lifts, a minimal prerequisite is the eyelid surgeon’s thorough understanding of the anatomy; only then can risks be minimized and complications avoided. Most eyelid specialists would agree that correction of lower eyelid aging with injectable fillers is a challenging procedure with minimal room for error. The procedure can be virtually painlessly performed with application of anesthesia cream. The lid skin is so thin, that topical anesthesia will effectively numb the eyelid. Longevity of the treatment depends on the product used and may vary from 6 months to a couple of years.

Non-surgical Eyelid Rejuvenation with Laser Treatments

Lasers can improve skin wrinkles and “tighten” loose lids. For these treatments to be effective, the laser resurfacing needs to penetrate into a significant skin depth resulting in a significant recovery which most commonly is longer than after state-of-the-art blepharoplasty. Given the associated risks with effective laser resurfacing, such laser treatments can barely be considered an easy alternative to surgical blepharoplasty.

Alternatively, non-ablative laser technologies are available today. Although these next generation lasers have a shorter recovery, efficacy is likewise decreased. Therefore, their value for eyelid rejuvenation is limited.

Although finances should not be a main deciding factor, it is important to understand that minimal-invasive does not mean minimal expenses.

Non-invasive Blepharoplasty with Radiofrequency Heat

Thermage and other machines heat deeper skin structures in order to achieve tightening of the skin. Application of these technologies to the eyelids is both minimally-effective and even potentially harmful. Most patients will not experience improvements comparable with surgical blepharoplasty.

Eyelid Rejuvenation with Botox

Botox can temporarily relax muscles. This treatment can soften crow’s feet around the eyes and sometimes wrinkles from the under-eye area. In addition, frown creases between the eyebrows can be diminished. These effects differ from surgical blepharoplasty and can barely be considered as such.
