Preparation for Blepharoplasty

Every cosmetic surgeon who performs significant numbers of eyelid lifts has a set of pre-operative instructions. They vary from doctor to doctor because of the plastic surgeon’s unique experiences and background. In case you decide to add the routine or drop certain recommendations, make sure to inform your doctor first. When you prepare for your blepharoplasty, ensure that you thoroughly understand all of your instructions. Rarely, a cosmetic surgeon may not have specific schedule for before and after the surgery because most surgeons understand the merit of a proven before and after-care schedule and understand their value for the overall success of the eyelid operation.

Recovery time from an eyelid lift varies but is around 10 to 12 days. Ensure that you are prepared for this period of time spent away from your “normal life” as most people are not accustomed to this. Having support from your significant other or a good friend will prove very helpful.

Before Your Eyelid Lift

Preparations before a blepharoplasty have been designed with your safety as the top priority. Your plastic surgeon wants to “align the stars” in a way to ensure a smooth procedure and a fast recovery. You should not smoke. Small blood vessels become partially obstructed from the nicotine leading to poor blood flow and a possible delayed healing. Therefore, nicotine patches or nicotine gum are also undesirable. Before your lid procedure, your plastic surgeon will ask you to discontinue any medications that could cause increased bleeding and bruising including Aspirin. ibuprofen, naproxen, Vitamin E, blood thinners etc. You will continue most of your other prescription medications including blood pressure, heart and asthma medications. Other prescription medications could interfere with your healing ability (steroids, biologics etc.). Your plastic surgeon will decide if you are still a good candidate for blepharoplasty surgery.

In general, blepharoplasty is usually a procedure that delivers a refreshed look and natural-appearing improvements. Therefore, after you have done your “homework”, you should look forward to this procedure!
